A woman who participates in ultraendurance events such as the Hawaii Ironman describes the psychological appeal of such activities. She likes to confront the limits of the body and feels that this is a process, not an end in itself. An athlete may confront a lifetime of emotions during one event.

The face of fear

Women athletes, especially those in high-risk sports, can balance fear to get enough of an edge to help them perform better. Fear is nothing to be ashamed of and some amount is a protection. Tips are given on how to manage fear. Substituting positive thoughts for fearful ones is one strategy.
