Women-friendly workplace campaign takes on mandatory arbitration

Article Abstract:

The National Organization for Women has pointed out the implications of mandatory arbitration policies implemented by different companies. Employees are forced to avail of arbitration to settle work-related complaints. This policy allows companies to escape the stringent requirements of civil law. Cases such as those concerning employment discrimination or sexual harassment will not have to deal with a court trial. Another law has diminished the gravity of punishment for unfair labor practices by putting a specific limit of one year's compensation to punitive damages.

Students take grassroots organizing 101

Article Abstract:

The National Organization for Women's campaign at universities has helped female college students realize the value of organizations. An example is the NOW campaign at the Claremont Colleges against Proposition 209, an anti-affirmative action bill. Although proposition 209 passed in the state, the campaign taught many Claremont female students that they have the power to effect change. After the election, women's groups and progressive organizations within the campus formed the Action Coalition of the Claremont Colleges.

California repeals affirmative action, sets stage for copycat attempts

Article Abstract:

The approval of Proposition 209 by California voters was a big loss for the National Organization for Women (NOW), which has fought hard against it. However, the NOW was pleased with the gains it had achieved in campaigning against Proposition 209. After the ballot results, a coalition led by the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 209.
