Some 70% of the chicken sold in the US is contaminated because government controls have been relaxed to allow cost-cutting processes that are unsanitary. Bivalve mollusks are often a source of infection, but there no government warnings against raw shellfish. Consumers should use careful food handling to prevent illness.

Supermarkets make it difficult to introduce new food products through a system that requires manufacturers to pay for space on their shelves. Thus, a product may typically cost $1 million to introduce into the market, and the practice allows only major producers to dominate consumers' choices.

The female condom

The Food and Drug Administration is likely to grant approval to the female condom even though the device is only 78% effective in preventing pregnancy and its effectiveness in preventing sexually transmitted disease has not been established.
