A Taylor vortex analogy in granular flows

Article Abstract:

Fluids sheared between concentric rotating cylinders undergo a series of three-dimensional instabilities. It is shown experimentally that granular materials develop vortices consistent with the primary Taylor instability in fluids. However, the vortices observed in fluidized granular bed are unlike those fluids in which they are accompanied by novel mixing-segregation transitions.

Static in motion

Article Abstract:

The article discusses the impact of the various electrostatic charges on the wind-blown transport of sand, which can seriously affect desertification and coastal management of the area. The findings prove that all the identical materials despite of their properties charge one another.

The brazil nut effect - in reverse

Article Abstract:

The phenomena of reverse brazil nut RBN effect in the problem of granular segregation is discussed. This phenomenon states that for nuts of a fixed density, there is a distinct size threshold above, which the nuts rise and below which they sink in a container of mixed nuts.
