A bacteriophage encoding a pathogenicity island, a type-IV pilus and a phage receptor in cholera bacteria
Article Abstract:
Many pathogenic bacteria have virulence properties due to proteins encoded by pathogenicity islands. The bacterial agent of Vibrio cholerae, the epidemic cholera, contains the cholera-toxin phage, which encodes the VPI, a large pathogenicity island. The VPI pathogenicity island has been identified as the genome of another filamentous bacteriophage which is transferred between V. cholerae strains.
