A gene for the mouse pink-eyed dilution locus and for human type II oculocutaneous albinism

Article Abstract:

Combined use of human and mouse genetics was used to study human type II occulocutaneous albinism (OCA). This disease involves multiple genes and complex phenotypes. Human complementary DNA DN10 has been linked to the gene for mouse pink-eyed dilution locus (p). DN10 has also been shown to identify the human homologue (P) of p. P is generally deleted in patients with type II OCA and is thought responsible for hypopigmentation in Prader-Willi and Angelman syndromes.

Genetics brought to book

Article Abstract:

A report on human genetics, by the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology, highlights the need for patenting genes and parts of genes based on a utility test. The report discusses the use and need of genetic diagnosis for employment and insurance of individuals, without violating their rights. Genetic screening should be done only when people with specific genetic constitutions are at risk from the work they do or are a risk to others.

Chromosomes and genes dissected

Article Abstract:

'Nature Genetics' is a new research journal launched by the publishers of 'Nature' to accommodate the growth in research on genetics. Articles in the first issue deal with such subjects as methods for examining chromosomes, automated DNA sequencers, disease-related mutations including the factors underlying Zellweger syndrome and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, the prion protein gene and the tumor suppressor gene's mutations.
