A little Eden off the interstate

Article Abstract:

Highlights of an 11,000-acre bird sanctuary in southern Florida called Corkscrew Swamp have been presented. This sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wading bird populations including wood storks, egrets, and blue herons. Seven hundred acres of bald cypress represent the largest bald cypress stand on earth and provide the framework for a number of plant and animal homes. Water levels and animal populations are closely monitored to keep this ecosystem in balance.

Little foxes

Article Abstract:

Swift foxes were known to roam between Alberta, Canada, and the Great Plains of the US. These nocturnal animals are very adaptable, but they do not have an easy life because of high mortality, loss of prairie habitat, and their small litters. During the 1930s, swift foxes became extinct in Canada, but a Canadian reintroduction program has established almost 280 foxes, which is estimated to increase to 400 by year 2000.
