Article Abstract:

The St. Louis Zoo, comprising 83 acres in St. Louis, Missouri, fulfills its educational mission by providing visitors with a variety of interactive and live displays to further their knowledge of animals and habitats. Exhibits include a simulated Ozark stream, a game intended to mimic sonar used by bats, and one of the world's largest aviaries, originally built for the 1904 World's Fair. The zoo plans to begin construction in 1997 of a complex of riverine wildlife exhibits. Other zoo exhibits are discussed and some of the zoo's current conservation projects are briefly described.

On the back of the tiger

Article Abstract:

Chinese students do not have the sort of appreciation for wildlife that westerners do, as animals are primarily thought of as domestic creatures, which have usefulness to humans. A new series of educational modules was tried by western teachers, who used aerobics, sporting events, and other gentle activities to encourage a love and interest in wild animals in their natural habitats. It was hoped that Chinese school teachers would continue to explore the interest that wild animals had on kids, and would promote wildlife conservation in their country.

China's revolution in education: a bold attempt to tame the environmental dragon

Article Abstract:

China is attempting to use Western style teaching methods in order to increase the spectrum of natural science education taught in the classrooms. One of the reasons is to increase knowledge of conservation methods in Chinese classrooms, and to encourage greater environmental understanding in a nation which is in danger of causing itself serious pollution problems in the future. The government has taken the unprecedented step of encouraging foreign teachers in its classrooms in order not to lose most favored nation status with the US.
