REPRISE SOUTENUE/
Article Abstract:
Progression levels were not the same, but all segments were up in the printing and writing paper field in consumption terms in France in 1997. Wood-containing coated papers went up by an estimated 2.1% over 1996 following a 6.5% decrease on average each year since 1990. The consumption of woodfree, non-coated paper is said to have gone up 8.9% in 1997, four times above the average yearly growth between 1990 and 1996 thanks to the continuing rise in reprographics and special paper. Woodfree, coated papers rose 12.7% (up 7.9% a year since 1990) while wood-containing coated papers surged 30% (compared to a 0.1% yearly increase since 1990 on average) thanks to the sharp increase in LWC paper consumption. Woodfree paper, worth two thirds of the French consumption, were up in 1997 again. Total consumption in printing and writing paper went up 14% in 1997. Orders have been above the production capacity for 17 weeks and stocks have reached a normal level.

Cross-border blues
Article Abstract:
A member of a fact-finding delegation sent by the National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice recounts the working and living conditions of maquiladora workers in Tehuacan, Mexico. The city has become a major production center of blue jeans that are sent to the US. The delegation found that the maquiladoras are systematically denied health and education benefits. Most of the workers have no prior experience working in factories and could easily be exploited because they do not know their rights. They live in make-shift homes with dirt floors and without running water or the proper drainage.

A polymerase I palm in adenylyl cylcase?
Article Abstract:
The structure determination of a eukaryotic adenylyl cylcase catalytic core domain promised increased understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of cylic AMP as a second messanger. The use of the programme PROTEP has since helped to find that the fold of the domain is similar to the palm domains of polymerase I, which is significant in the function and evolution of eukaryotic adenylyl cyclases.
