A sonic/radio tag for monitoring dive depths and underwater movements of whales

Article Abstract:

A tag with sonic transmitter and a VHF radio transmitter is used to mark free-swimming whales and study their dive-depths and underwater movements. Dive depths are recorded from the pulse interval-coded signal produced by the sonic transmitter which tracks underwater whales from less than 2 kms. Whales at the surface of the sea can be tracked down by the VHF radio transmitter from 10 km. The tag provides data more accurately than the sonar systems.
