A star powered by magnetism
Article Abstract:
Neutron stars are the densest objects in the Universe and have strong magnetic fields. Soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) are extremely rare and differ from classical gamma-ray bursters because they have a softer gamma-ray spectra, recurrent outbursts and short durations. New research links SGR1806-20 with an X-ray pulsar with a period of just under eight seconds and a magnetic field much stronger than those of radio pulsars. The star's existence supports the theory that starquakes caused by magnetic stresses produce SGR bursts.

Discovery of a cool brown dwarf
Article Abstract:
G1229B is a cool brown dwarf having a temperature of less than 1200 K. The mass of G1229B is about 20-50 times that of Jupiter and it appears to be a companion of the star G1229. An analysis of coronagraphs indicates that G1229B is positioned 7.69 plus or minus 0.1 arcsec from G1229A at PA = 162 degrees plus or minus 1 degree. Measurement of the parallax with the Hubble Space Telescope should provide evidence for the companionship between G1229B and G1229A.
