A time for scientific diplomacy: Both India and Pakistan have much to gain from closer collaboration between their scientific communities
Article Abstract:
The decisions by India and Pakistan to test nuclear devices will hamper communication between the scientists of both countries. Scientists from both countries do meet at international venues, but contact is rare and scientific collaboration has become a casualty of tense relations between the two countries. However scientific collaboration has been shown to help ease political tensions, and science could be used to help the countries resolve a range of common problems, such as diseases, agricultural issues and environmental issues.

WHO steps closer to its responsibilities
Article Abstract:
Elements of the World Health Organization's (WHO) draft bioethics guidelines give cause for hope that the WHO is now willing to take a more balanced part in international discussion about bioethics. It is clear that the WHO, as an intergovernmental organization with close links with health ministries globally, has a responsibility to provide leadership in bioethics. However, it will be necessary to go beyond the guidelines if the WHO is to play an influential role in bioethics.
