A unified picture of the crystal structures of metals

Article Abstract:

The width of the electron states that determine the chemical bonding is the vital parameter in investigating the crystal structures of the elemental metals which appears to be mediated by the balance between electrostatic interactions and a Peierls crystal lattice distortion. The simple and transition metals possess symmetrical close-packed structures, but the light actinides are loosely packed with low-symmetry structures. On expanding the lattice, the simple and transition metals develop low-symmetry structures.

Stability of the body-centred-cubic phase of iron in the Earth's inner core

Article Abstract:

Iron is described to be the main constituent of the Earth's core, and its properties at high temperature and pressure are examined. The results of molecular dynamics simulations of iron based on embedded atom models are explained.
