Activists seek retirement home for chimps

Article Abstract:

Animal rights organizations in the US have suggested setting up sanctuaries for chimpanzees relieved from AIDS research programs. Jointly funded by the National Institute of Health and voluntary organizations, the sanctuaries may be modeled on existing ones in Africa. The AIDS research project resulted in ageing chimpanzees infected with HIV. Returning them to their natural habitat in Africa or killing them is morally unacceptable. The animals need care and the sanctuaries could be the ideal place for their retirement.

SSC supporters hope for a last-ditch reprieve

Article Abstract:

The Superconducting Super Collider's US supporters hope Japan and other East Asian nations will aid it if the White House promises to give them a voice in the project, a share of science time to use it and help building the next such device in East Asia. George Brown, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, led the move. Japanese officials are skeptical, though others from Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan may be interested.

Customs delays drive researchers to smuggling

Article Abstract:

In Latin America scientists do not have fast access to equipment and materials. This is often due to customs delays and scientists have to plan their work around the uncertain time delays. The Mexican research council, CONACYT can help expedite supplies through its office at Mexico City airport. The two main Chilean research universities have established beachheads in the US to help with the movement of materials.
