Alarm in US over database antipiracy bill

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed in the US about legislation designed to strengthen the intellectual property protection of commercial databases. Publishers welcome the legislation, as it should assist in protecting large commercial databases from electronic piracy. In contrast, other observers believe that the legislation will have a negative impact on the free exchange of information among academic researchers. The Information Technology Association of America believes that there should be a less wide-reaching amendment to existing copyright law.

Gore's satellite may fill role of lost SOHO

Article Abstract:

The US space agency NASA is seeking proposals for the Triana spacecraft, suggested by Vice president Al Gore. The satellite would be parked in stable orbit and take live pictures of Earth. However earth scientists believe that it may steer funds away from more legitimate projects, and they believe that the satellite should also carry solar radiation sensors, or a more capable camera. The proposals follow the apparent loss of the US-European Solar and Heliospheric Observatory.

Rescued satellite to get more managers

Article Abstract:

An extra layer of management is being proposed by officials of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) satellite to prevent problems that almost led to its loss. Space science managers at the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center plan to reinstate the SOHO programme office to ensure that procedures are closely scrutinized, especially in the event of procedure changes.
