All's well that ends dead

Article Abstract:

Wang and colleagues have described a previously unknown type of autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS), arising from congenital mutations in caspase-10 a death protease. Caspases are central to mammalian apoptosis and in ALPS patients accumulate an unusual population of T cells bearing neither CD4 or CD8. Wang and colleagues found that bacterially expressed caspase-10 mutants had reduced enzymatic and autoprocessing activities, with reduced ability to induce apoptosis, suggesting that caspase-10 is defective in ALPS patients.

Akt is more than just a Bad kinase

Article Abstract:

Recent research has produced more information about how the serine/threonine kinase known as Akt/protein kinase B carries out its anti-apoptotic effects. This research has been particularly valuable in indicating that Akt changes the activity of factors that regulate gene transcription. It has been established that platelet-derived growth factor prompts the activation of nuclear factor-kappaB, with this pathway depending on activation of Akt. There is a direct connection between Akt and the kinases that phosphorylate IkappaB.
