An achaete-scute homologue essential for neuroendocrine differentiation in the lung

Article Abstract:

The achaete-scute family of transcription factors, in Drosophila and vertebrates, play an important part in the development of neuronal commitment and differentiation. Research into the human achaete-scute homologue-1 (hASH1) is described, showing that it has selective expression in normal fetal pulmonary neuroendocrine cells. Neuroendrocrine marker expression is significantly decreased on depletion of the transcription factor. The conservation of neurogenic pathways from Drosophila to mammals indicates that hASH1 regulation in lung cancer could involve inhibited interaction of vertebrate homologues of the neurogenic factors of Drosophila.

Phosphotyrosine-dependent activation of Rac-1 GDP/GTP exchange by the vav proto-oncogene product

Article Abstract:

Rac-1, a protein which plays a significant role in cell proliferation and cytoskeletal organization, is a major effector molecule in the signalling cascade of the vav proto-oncogene product. Tyrosine-phosphorylated Vav stimulates GDP/GTP exchange on Rac-1 thereby activating this GTPase. Phosphorylation of Vav on tyrosine residues also results in the nucleotide exchange on Rac-1 in vivo and stimulates c-Jun kinase.
