Andes observatories belatedly take root

Article Abstract:

Many astronomers see Chile as the best place for astronomy and around 800 foreign astronomers visit each year. The Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) has seven telescopes and there are telescopes at Las Campanas and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The Andes Foundation, a New York based trust fund, sees astronomy as the key Chilean science, and there are collaborations between the Catholic University and University of Chile, and Princeton and Yale universities.
