April come she will

Article Abstract:

One year after the fateful Rodney King trial verdict in 1992, south-central Los Angeles is still suffering from the social malady that triggered the explosion of last year's violence. To help in healing these wounds, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) has initiated long-term links between the campus and the city. The variety of post-riot initiatives are characterized by a commitment by the university people to devote their time and analytical skills to deal with the city's problems. However, the city is still generally unaware of UCLA's initiatives, and when they are aware, are suspicious of its motives.

Unlawful entry

Article Abstract:

California owes much of its wealth to its immigrants, which comprise more than one-fifth of its population. However, the constant influx of immigrants is now a problem which is excacerbating the effects of the recession and federal budget cuts. Although California is required to provide healthcare, child benefit and superannuation benefits to its immigrants, the state's immigration policy is dictated by Washington. Because of this, California's governor is demanding that Congress appropriate $1.5 billion to compensate for the cost of assimilating immigrants.

Technology transfer

Article Abstract:

The University of California is now planning to strengthen links between academic institutions and business as a way out of its present economic dilemma. In the past, the University system focused to much on research that produced people with Ph.Ds rather than new technologies. The new approach will engender the setting up of corporations that will enhance and facilitate the technology transfer mechanism. This will entail direct discussions with the industrial sector even while ideas are at the benchtop stage.
