Asian states take 'first step' on acid rain

Article Abstract:

Nine Asian states, including Japan, Malaysia, Russia and South Korea, are to discuss establishing an acid rain monitoring network. A consensus document agreed by the participants calls for a two-year preparatory stage for the network, which will begin in April 1998. Sulphur emissions from 20 Asian countries totalled an estimated 34 million t in 1990, with the World Bank forecasting that emissions could reach 78 million t by 2010 if no action is taken. European sulphur emissions are set to fall from 38 million t to 14 million t over the same period.

Radical restructuring in Japan merges science and education

Article Abstract:

The Japanese government is planning to create a single Ministry for Culture, Education, Science and Technology. This will bring together the existing Science and Technology Agency (STA) and Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture. A parliamentary decision on the reform scheme is due to be made by spring 1998. The planned merger creates uncertainties about a number of issues, including the future of the mission-oriented research units attached to the STA.
