Australian university fights off research council's 'hijack' bid
Article Abstract:
A dispute has erupted between the Australian National University (ANU) and the Australian Research Council (ARC) over the allocation of research funds. The latest ARC report has dispensed with the special treatment accorded to the ANU and recommended a freezing of the block grant to ANU's Institute of Advanced Studies at the 1995 level. The ANU views the move as an ARC ploy to reallocate some of ANU funds to other universities. The report reflects the efforts of major metropolitan universities to challenge ANU's claim for special allocation of research funds from the ARC pool.

Savings drive unsettles Australian science
Article Abstract:
Researchers in Australia are concerned because the newly elected John Howard's government is considering decreasing direct funding and indirect funding by universities to science and technology. The government has also cut down the number of staff in the Departments of Industry, Science and Tourism, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. This will help the government in to direct more money to research. However, the 5-10% cuts in funding to universities will adversely affect teaching and research.
