Avian diving, respiratory physiology and the marginal value theorem

Article Abstract:

Three pursuit-diving seabird species, the shag, the black guillemot and the common guillemot, showed a peak in the relationship between the ratio of dive duration to the duration of the subsequent period on the surface and dive duration. The dive to surface ratio peaked at short dive durations with the depletion of oxygen stores upon surfacing, supporting the predictions of two marginal value diving models where the oxygen uptake curve has been incorporated.

Male mate choice and female fecundity in zebra finches

Article Abstract:

Female zebra finches are separated into two groups, one group receiving dietary supplements, the other eating a standard diet. Male zebra finches are then studied for their reaction to both supplemented and standard female finches, in order to determine the sexual preference of male finches on the basis of female fecundity. The setup of the zebra finch cages are diagramed, and the results appear on bar graphs.

Behavioral responses to human disturbance: A matter of choice?

Article Abstract:

The link between individual state and responsiveness is tested by manipulating condition via the provision of supplementary food for turnstones, Arenaria interpres, on rocky shores. Birds on one site were fed 450 g of mealworms at low tide everyday for 3 days while birds at another site acted as a control.
