Barbary macaques categorize shrill barks into call types
Article Abstract:
Barbary macaques, Macaca sylvanus, voice out a kind of shrill bark as a response to disturbances in their environment. The hypotheses that macaques differentiate their calls depending on the kind of stimulus and that their perception of calls agreed with the classification obtained from acoustic analysis were tested. Findings revealed that the macaques do categorize their calls depending on the stimulus. Also, subjects from the population in which the recordings were performed were substantially better than those from the other population at distinguishing calls with small acoustic differences.

Use of statistical programs for nonparametric tests of small samples often leads to incorrect P values: examples from 'Animal Behaviour.'
Article Abstract:
A null hypothesis may be falsely rejected or accepted and, consequently, the results of a study misinterpreted, when inappropriate asymptotic tests and corresponding significance levels are used while sample size is below the threshold for doing so. Statistical programs for nonparametric tests of small samples must be used with care and checking of the proper testing of small sample sizes should be undertaken. Examples of papers published in 'Animal Behavior' which used nonparametric tests with small sample sizes are presented.

Testing related samples with missing values: A permutation approach
Article Abstract:
Permutation tests do no make assumptions about theoretical distributions of test statistics and allow the use of a test statistic derived from original data. When developing a permutation test an appropriate randomization procedure is required, along with a test statistic that describes the data sufficiently.
