Behavioural and endocrine predictors of dominance and tolerance in female common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus

Article Abstract:

Dominant and subordinate adult female marmosets show variation in their combative responses to unfamiliar female marmosets. Dominant females are more aggressive and less submissive and exhibit more intra-sexual aggression and less intra-sexual submission unlike subordinate female marmosets. Behavioral difference is independent of social status and individual differences in the agonistic behavior determine the social status. Females living in established social groups show less response toward stimulus animals than male-female pairs.

Social determinants of reproductive failure in male common marmosets housed with their natal family

Article Abstract:

The effects of rank-related suppression and incest avoidance on reproductive performance in male common marmosets were evaluated. The results suggest that mating avoidance with familiar females and possibly father-son competition, although not specific, rank-related suppression, contributes to reproductive failure in postpubertal male marmosets living with their natal family.

Onset of plural cooperative breeding in common marmoset families following replacement of the breeding male

Article Abstract:

The incorporation of an unrelated male into a common marmoset family, Callithrix jacchus, reliably induces the onset of plural breeding. The inbreeding avoidance and rank-related reproductive suppression may constrain reproduction in marmoset daughters and contribute to maintenance of singular breeding.
