Biodiversity and the nation state: regulating access to genetic resources limits biodiversity research in developing countries

Article Abstract:

The World Convention of Biological Diversity assigned control over biodiversity to individual countries. Developing countries feel northern countries are exploiting their biodiversity. Biopiracy laws try to control the use of genetic resources by corporations, but limiting access to genetic resources prevents the advancement of knowledge of biodiversity. In practice, most states exercise strict control over genetic resources.

Effect of the introduced common slipper shell on the suprabenthic biodiversity of the subtidal communities in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc

Article Abstract:

The suprabenthic fauna collected in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in September 1995 and May 1996 at two sites colonized by Crepidula fornicata is compared with that of one of the site where it was absent. The differential abundance and swimming activity of certain species are linked to the conversion of the formerly soft substrate to now hard, shelled substrate.
