Adaptive fetal sex allocation in elk: evidence and implications
Article Abstract:
The fetal sex ratios of Oregon elk vary according to their kidney fat index, which is an indicator of their body condition. Elk with high levels of kidney fat tend to produce more males as well as conceiving earlier than elk with less kidney fat. Simulations indicate that it is rare for sex ratio equality to occur, and this is borne out by data from Oregon. A bias toward daughters could occur when elk are in poor condition, due to intrauterine deaths. This finding could be important for wildlfie management of elk.

Effects of radiotransmitters on survival and reproductive success of gray partridge
Article Abstract:
There has been a drop in numbers of gray partridges in the north of France, and causes of mortality have been investigated in a field study. The impact of radiotags on survival has been examined for spring 1995 and spring 1996, and, while no impact was found in 1995, there were some adverse affects in 1996. Environmental conditions could influence whether radiotags affect these birds. These findings mean that caution should be exercised in interpreting data from radiotags.
