Biosphere 2 project told to make room for science
Article Abstract:
An independent panel recommended that artificial ecosystem Biosphere 2 appoint a scientific director, draw up and implement a research plan and allow its findings to be examined in peer-reviewed journals. An eight-member committee of environmental scientists, led by ecologist Thomas Lovejoy, reported that these changes are essential if the $150 million Biosphere 2 facility in Arizona is to achieve any genuine scientific importance. Space Biosphere Ventures, the firm managing the project, announced that it was pondering the selection of a scientific director.

Research effort is preserved in plan to close London Zoo
Article Abstract:
Research at the Regent's Park site of the London Zoo will continue despite the Zoological Society of London's plan to close the zoo in Sep 1992 due to a yearly deficit of $3.5 million. The research will go on because it centers on field work and on cooperation with other zoos rather than on the London Zoo's animals. However, the zoo's research staff is backing a plan to preserve the zoo as a center for animal conservation. The staffers criticize the Society for not winning public recognition of the zoo's role in conservation.
