Blimp1 is a critical determinant of the germ cell lineage in mice

Article Abstract:

A demonstration that Blimp1, a known transcriptional repressor, has a critical role in the foundation of the mouse germ cell lineage, as its disruption causes a block early in the process of primordial germ cell formation is presented. Blimp1-deficient mutant embryos form a consistent repression of homeobox genes that normally accompany specification of primordial germ cells.

A new route to rejuvenation

Article Abstract:

Embryonic stem cells have the exceptional ability to either multiply indefinitely or differentiate into all the specialized adult cell types. Scientists have shown that it is possible to reprogramme adult body cells to have the characteristic of stem cells by rejuvenating them by initiating a new transcriptional network.

Stem cells: how to make eggs and sperm

Article Abstract:

The procedure to obtain sperm-like cells from mouse embryonic stem cells (ES cells) in vitro is discussed. The fusion of egg and sperm gives rise to a new individual.
