Blue lists of threatened species with stabilized or increasing abundance: A new instrument for conservation

Article Abstract:

The use of Blue Lists that enumerate those red-list species experiencing lasting overall stabilization or an increase in abundance in the region considered is proposed to counter the depressing information contained in Red Lists and similar lists of threatened species. The scientific and psychological weaknesses and strengths of Blue Lists, which help to strengthen public motivation for conservation and advance self-confidence among conservationists, are discussed.

Ranking in threatened species classification: reply to Todd

Article Abstract:

The appropriate intersection and union operates for the method and how this affects interpretation of the results is discussed. Using different operators, the option of interpreting the numbers as probabilities is not viable unless the resulting algebra obeys the Kolmogorov axioms and it is well known that subjective probabilities satisfy the Kolmogorov axioms.

Fuzzy sets and threatened species classification

Article Abstract:

Fuzzy set theory is a tool for dealing with uncertainty in conservation biology. Attention is drawn towards the shortcomings of the theory put forward by Todd and Burgman. It is argued that the excursion into fuzzy set theory is not necessary.
