Boosting access to disease data

Article Abstract:

A scheme called the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID) is initiated to facilitate the sharing of avian-flu samples and data among nations. Although countries and scientists in affected countries might be reluctant to share outbreak data, the proposed scheme, based on guidelines for sharing data in large-scale biological research, could provide a model for rapid dissemination of data from outbreaks of future emerging diseases, since sharing is essential for collective research, surveillance and control.
