Britain to help coal centre develop cleaner technologies
Article Abstract:
UK Department of Trade and Industry announced that the government will allocate four million pounds a year for three years to support research into cleaner and more efficient methods of burning coal. The main benificiary of this allotment will be the Coal Research Establishment, which has suffered funding cuts in recent years. Most of the funds will go toward the development of the topping cycle, a coal burning method which involves fluidized bed combustion and gasification techniques. The funds release was also meant to allay fears that government policy toward privatization of the coal industry would result in reduced funding support.

Rutherford and Daresbury labs to merge as 'self-standing institution.' (Britain's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Daresbury Laboratory)
Article Abstract:
The British government has decided to merge the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory with the Daresbury Laboratory, and put both under the management of the Office of Science and Technology. The move is part of a plan to reorganize research councils, as recommended by recent policy document. The labs will share a common mission as well, one that will be less restricted than previous policy, which was decided by the Science and Engineering Research Council. While some worry that the labs will eventually be privatised, others at the labs welcome the opportunity to conduct more effective research.

Britain to support aerospace
Article Abstract:
Britain's aerospace industry is likely to benefit from the government's decision to align science funding with the long-term goals of industry. The Dept of Trade and Industry will meet with other government departments to discuss the goals of the aerospace industry and see how each sector of the government can help in reaching them. The government's actions conform to the nation's National Strategic Technology Acquisition Plan, whose goal is to enhance technological research in the best interest of industrial strength.
