CJD link prompts ban on brain tissue use
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that infected dura mater could have been responsible for up to 43 cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Japan since the second half of the 1980s. This has prompted the government to ban the import and use of dura mater grafts. Japanese officials claim that they only became aware of the possibility of iatrogenic transmission of the disease by dura mater in 1996, even though the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention produced a report on this issue which was highlighted by researchers in 1987.

Japan's bioethics debate lags behind thinking in the West
Article Abstract:
There are many political difficulties associated with addressing the ethical problems created by new biomedical techniques in Japan. There is generally only limited public interest in biomedical issues, and this means that the government has not yet established regulations for cloning or handling of human genes. Many Japanese people have only limited awareness of genetic technologies and scientific research, but they are generally supportive of them.
