Carbon monoxide emission as a precise tracer of molecular gas in the Andromeda galaxy

Article Abstract:

Stars can form within cold molecular hydrogen (H2) clouds, where H2 is invisible, so its motion and distribution have to be inferred. Carbon monoxide (CO) emission provides most existing knowledge of this process, but the issue of whether CO can function as an effective tracer for hydrogen is contentious. The Milky Way cannot by itself provide data to understand this issue, since it is edge-on in orientation, so the Andromeda galaxy has been selected for study instead. There appears to be a close association between dust and CO emission, and CO does appear to function as a tracer for molecular gas.

Visibility of scattered broad-line emission in Seyfert 2 galaxies

Article Abstract:

Polarized broad emission lines in a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies were systematically searched via spectropolarimetry. The approach avoided the selection biases encountered in previous Seyfert 2 galaxy incursions. An unknown hidden broad-line region was discovered in the galaxy IC3639. Results showed the relationship between the detection of scattered broad emission lines and the far-infrared colors.
