Carotenoid-based epaulettes reveal male competitive ability: experiments with resident and floater red-shouldered widowbirds

Article Abstract:

Two experiments were conducted, in male red-shouldered widowbirds Euplectes axillaries, to investigate whether the natural variation in this color signal reveals male competitive ability. The result confirms the natural fitness consequences of the experimentally demonstrated agonistic signal function of the red epaulettes, in territory establishment and male contests.

The function of threat display in wintering great tits

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the pattern of occurrence of agonistic displays and attacks in captive flocks of wintering great tits, Parus major. The result reveals that the presence of raptors near aviaries and warning calls from other birds outside will influence an individual bird's motivation to compete at the feeder.

Discrimination abilities for nutrients: which difference matters for choosy birds and why?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the nutrient choices of four tanagers for different lipid or carbohydrate concentrations. The result reveals that nutritional composition and consequently nutrient regulation apply a strong influence on food intake in birds.
