Cause of wild dog deaths
Article Abstract:
African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) populations of Serengeti National Park have declined resulting from disease. It has been suggested that this results from latent rabies activation following immunosuppression consequent on the stress of handling by man. A study has shown that captive wild dogs have increased levels of cortisol when immobilized by darting. Though chronic corticosteroid elevation is known to cause immunosuppression, the study establishes neither chronically high levels nor its occurrence in the wild. Other factors special to the Serengeti should be considered carefully.

Emplacement of a large igneous province as a possible cause of banded iron formation 2.45 billion years ago
Article Abstract:
A large igneous province consisting of more than 30,000 cu.km. of dolerite, basalt and rhyolite accompanied deposition of the Hamersley Province banded iron formation (BIF), contesting the general view that the latest Archaean and earliest Paleoproterozoic times had been a largely quiescent period of earth history. Evidences indicate that the largest Paleoproterozoic BIFs probably formed as a result of increased supply of suboxic iron and silica-rich seawater upwelling onto continental shelves during periods of magmatic and hydrothermal activity.

Root cause of fish buoyancy
Article Abstract:
So-called Root-effect haemoglobin help fishes to retain buoyancy. Fishes need to regulate the amount of gas in the swim bladder in order to compensate for changes due to water pressure and diffusion losses. The Root effect is a pH-dependent reduction of the oxygen affinity of blood haemoglobin causing free oxygen to fill the swim bladder along with nitrogen from the gas gland. Further mutagenesis studies are needed to confirm this speculation.
