Champions or challengers of the cause of science?

Article Abstract:

The Science Studies Unit at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, was created in the mid-1960s with the aim of trying to bridge the gap between science and the arts. However, it is now being criticized by some observers, who feel that it is having a negative impact on the image of science. Barry Barnes, David Bloor and Steven Shapin, who began working together at the unit in the early 1970s, developed the 'strong programme,' which aims to investigate the social dynamics of scientific debates without making assumptions about whether particular arguments are right or wrong.

UK contract staff need help, says report

Article Abstract:

Contract researchers in the UK may require proper guidance on career prospects according ot a report published by the Research Careers Initiative (RCI). Many contract researchers take on contract positions in the hope of ultimately being appointed to an academic post, but only 20% currently achieve this. Contract researchers were found to receive little career guidance and it is suggested that research funders should take on a more pro-active role.
