Change comes slowly to South Africa
Article Abstract:
The ending of apartheid and the political isolation, is yet to show any effect on the research activity in South Africa. The declining exchange rate of rand against most international currencies has increased the cost of scientific equipments and international journals. The political rivalry between the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African National Congress has had a negative effect on the development of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. The spending on research in 1993-1994 was around 0.75% of the gross domestic product.

Student 'targets' may give boost to strategic planning in South Africa
Article Abstract:
South Africa's National Commission for Higher Education may limit the number of students in different disciplines in tertiary education institutions in an effort to correct the mismatch in manpower requirement and supply. The move may spur more black students to study science and engineering. There has been a mixed reaction to this plan and several other proposals aimed at providing support to historically black institutions.
