Article Abstract:

It is uncertain whether Celera's whole-genome shotgun sequencing method will make it possible to rapidly sequence the human genome, according to Allan Bradley, who is to become director of the Sanger Centre in Oct 2000. This is the largest DNA sequencing centre involved in the Human Genome Project.

Mixed views continue to be expressed in the UK about whether trial plantings of genetically modified crops should be made. Environmental groups have made several objections to trial plantings, including the fact that bird populations will not be monitored directly.
