Characteristic or haphazard?

Article Abstract:

Excavations under lakes and ponds by paleoseismologists may provide evidence to support the view that earthquakes of the same size recur in the same place over a period of time. The fine layers of carbon-dominated strata in these sites help geologists analyze the regularity of seismographic incidents. However, sufficient data is yet to be collected to prove the theory. Haphazard investigations and a dearth of dedicated personnel are major hindrances to the success of the project.

Which fault and what next?

Article Abstract:

Geologic studies on the Northridge earthquake provide disputing reports regarding the fault system, implicating both the Oak Ridge fault and the Elysian Park thrust in the earthquake shock. The Oak Ridge fault, extending 70 km east from Northridge into the Ventura basin, is a region of high historic strain and provides a high threat for future earthquakes. The Elysian Park and the Santa Susana anticlinorium are also highly dangerous and could trigger future shocks.

Tectonic contraction across Los Angeles after removal of groundwater pumping effects

Article Abstract:

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar imagery has been used to study the deformation connected with groundwater pumping and strike-slip faulting in the Los Angeles basin. It was established that extensive groundwater and oil pumping obscures and sometimes resembles the tectonic signals anticipated from the blind thrust faults.
