Characterization of low-dimensional dynamics in the crayfish caudal photoreceptor

Article Abstract:

A technique determining unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) predicts low-dimensional dynamics in the caudal photoreceptor neurons of the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. The photoreceptors show deterministic chaos with statistical reliability. UPOs of low order are easily determined while higher order UPOs are blurred by noise. The method determines the time series for rare events which are indicators of deterministic behavior, rather than determining the characteristics of the entire series.

Patterns of elevated free calcium and calmodulin activation in living cells

Article Abstract:

The fluorescent reagent MeroCaM is activated by free calcium in fibroblasts. Its activation corresponds to the spatial distribution of free calcium and also to the contraction of transverse fibres when a wound is healing. As fibroblasts migrate during the later phases of wound-healing, they display a gradient of calcium, and of MeroCaM, that increases from front to rear.
