Characterization of luteinizing hormone secretion in the primiparous, lactating sow: relationship to blood metabolites and return-to-estrus interval

Article Abstract:

Luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion throughout a 28-day lactation period and the relationship among LH secretion, weaning-to-estrus intervals and blood hormones and metabolites were investigated in primiparous Landrace x Yorkshire sows. The results showed that LH profile changes 14 days into lactation correlates with delayed return to estrus after weaning. Decreased insulin levels seven days into lactation was correlated with the altered LH profile. These results indicate that serum insulin levels during lactation could indicate subsequent reproduction function.

Influence of glucose infusions on luteinizing hormone secretion in the energy-restricted, primiparous, lactating sow

Article Abstract:

The effect of glucose infusion during lactation on luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion of sow feeding on a low-energy diet was investigated. Plasma glucose, serum insulin and serum LH were monitored every 15 minutes on day 18 of lactation. The results showed that glucose infusion dramatically increased plasma glucose and serum insulin levels in energy-restricted, lactating sows. In contrast with nutrient-restricted sows, glucose infusion had no effect on pulsatile LH secretion.

Hourly administration of GnRH to prepubertal gilts: endocrine and ovulatory responses from 70 to 190 days of age

Article Abstract:

The response of prepubertal sows (70-day to 190-day old) to hourly administration of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) was assessed by measuring serum hormonal concentrations and timing ovulation. Injection of GnRH increased estradiol, luteinizing hormone and progesterone levels in sows. Ovulation was observed in two of the 70-day old gilts and all of the older sows. This indicated that ovulation and pubertal estrus are preceded by bursts of GnRH secretion in gilts.
