Chimps lead evolutionary race

Article Abstract:

Geneticists have revealed that greater numbers of chimpanzee genes are shaped by positive selection, in which natural selection favors beneficial mutations. The selected genes that are most favored in chimps are genes for protein metabolism and stress responses, whereas the human genes are involved in processes such as fatty-acid metabolism.

The Mbendjele pygmies from the Republic of Congo have found a new way to save the trees that are important to them. The U.K.-based Forest Peoples Programme has helped these people in setting up their own radio station to discuss community issues such as logging and AIDS awareness.

Old tools shed light on hobbit origins

Article Abstract:

Some of the old tools found on the Indonesian Island of Flores and dated to more than 700,000 years ago have shed light on the origins of hobbits. The dispute between the evolutionary history of Homo floresiensis and Homo erectus are discussed.
