Circadian rhythms in olfactory response of Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

Feedback loops involving several clock genes such as period (per) and timeless (tim) are key mechanisms in circadian timekeeping in arthropods and vertebrates. In Drosophila, the fruitfly, circadian oscillations in per expression happen in chemosensory cells of the antennae. A robust circadian rhythm is demonstrated in Drosophila, in electro-physiological responses to olfactory stimuli. The rhythms are abolished in three Drosophila strains with altered expression of circadian clock genes.

Two circadian oscillators in one cell

Article Abstract:

The unicellular alga Gonyaulax polyedra was grown under constant dim red light and the rhythmic patterns of bioluminescence and aggregation were monitored. The results showed that bioluminescence and aggregation rhythms are independent and are controlled by two different timing mechanisms. Therefore, the results demonstrate that a single cell can have at least two circadian clocks, or a separate oscillator for the two different rhythms.

Circadian organization in reindeer

Article Abstract:

The continuous lighting conditions of summer and of winter at high latitudes cause a loss in daily rhythmic activity in reindeer living far above the Arctic Circle. Reduced circadian organization may enhance animals' responsiveness and speed of phase adaptation to the light/dark cycle.
