Clinton picks NSF chief as science adviser
Article Abstract:
National Science Foundation director, Neal Lane, has been selected as director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the White House, and President Bill Clinton's science adviser. Lane's previous posts include provost of Rice University, Houston. He is seen as skilful and cautious. The appointment has to be confirmed by Senate, and Lane will have to obtain security clearance priot to taking up the post. Jack Gibbons, the existing holder of the post, is due to leave in Mar 1999.

French ministry reopens inquiry into conduct of INSERM unit
Article Abstract:
The French inquiry into the activities of a laboratory of the national biomedical research agency INSERM, is to be reopened, after criticisms by the university where the laboratory is sited, of the way the previous investigation had been handled. The debate focuses on claims that the Laboratory of Nutrition, Lipoprotein Metabolism and Atherosclerosis has identified and cloned a lipolysis stimulated receptor, having possible implications for obesity research.

ANC adviser takes over at science ministry
Article Abstract:
Roger Jardine, the science policy adviser to the African National Congress (ANC), is announced as the new director-general of South Africa's Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, the ministry that controls government-funded research councils. This 29-year-old radiological physicist is faced with challenges associated with the political and financial situation of the ministry.
