Closure of astrophysics laboratory blamed on Enola Gay 'fallout.' (National Air and Space Museum Laboratory of Astrophysics)
Article Abstract:
Many observers believe that the closure of the National Air and Space Museum's Laboratory of Astrophysics is tied to a 1995 controversy involving former museum dir. Martin Harwit. Harwit, who had founded the laboratory in 1987, came under severe criticism from lawmakers and veterans' groups for approving a controversial exhibition about the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber which dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima at the close of World War II. Informed sources believe that the laboratory is being closed for the simple reason that it was Harwit's creation.

Sorting stardust: Isotope astrophysics
Article Abstract:
Primitive chondrite meteorites contain microscopic diamonds which are of astrophysical and mineralogical interest. Two classes of pre-solar diamond have been identified, indicating that they come from two different environments. The diamonds are thought to be pre-solar due to their unusual isotopic composition, and must have formed around other stars. They may have formed in the atmospheres of red-giant stars and the remnants of super-nova explosions.

Tabletop astrophysics
Article Abstract:
Physicists at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, amd Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology believe that Bose-Einstein condensates can behave like black holes and simulate several of the properties of collapsing and exploding stars.
