Collective detection of predatory attack by social foragers: fraught with ambiguity?
Article Abstract:
The mechanism of collective detection of predators occurs in an ambiguous way amongst groups of sparrows. Departures from the flock help the non-detectors to infer approaching threats. Multiple departures in a short period of time significantly influence the activity of non-detectors. It is difficult to distinguish between predator- and non-predator-mediated departures in order to infer approaching threat. Non-detectors regulate their escape on the basis of departures from the flock.

Sleeping under the risk of predation
Article Abstract:
Insights into both the function and nature of sleep are described when animals spend much of their lives in vulnerable state. Studies have suggested that mammals and birds sleep lightly sensing risk to their lives, reflecting the similar influence of stress on sleep in humans and rats.

Laterality in avian vigilance: do sparrows have a favourite eye?
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates whether sparrows favour one eye over the other when visually scanning for predators. The study shows that laterality exists in avian vigilance although it may differ, even in closely related species.
