Concentration of plasma cholesterol in beef cows and calves, milk production and calf gain

Article Abstract:

Periodic measurements show that calf plasma cholesterol is more closely related to milkfat intake rather than to total milk intake up until weaning time. Thyroxine treatment decreased cow plasma cholesterol for two sampling periods. Breed group affected cow plasma cholesterol, being higher in crossbred cows. Plasma cholesterol did not affect milk yield, but yield was decreased by thyroxine treatment and influenced by breed. Growth was not influenced by either cow or calf cholesterol level, but was affected by breed and milk intake. Correlations within the cow and calf cholesterol levels averaged 0.65.

Maternal performance of Hereford, Brangus, and reciprocal crossbred cows under semidesert conditions

Article Abstract:

The effects of maternal heterosis of Hereford, Brangus, and reciprocal crossbred cows were evaluated based on their performance and production records under semidesert conditions. The progeny of either Brangus sires or dams exhibited superior qualities compared to those of the Hereford variety. The straightbred Hereford cattle were consistently the poorest and least efficient producers. Weaning fewer kilograms as a percentage of body wei
