Neon isotopes constrain convection and volatile origin in the Earth's mantle
Article Abstract:
Neon isotopes in the convecting mantle, resolved in magmatic CO(sub2) well gases, which are consistent with a volatile source related to solar corpuscular irradiation of accreting material, are shown. Neon isotope heterogeneity in various mantle parts indicates the portions where the plume resource provides the convecting mantle with its volatile inventory require modification.

Constraints on the origins of hydrocarbon gas from compositions of gases at their site of origin
Article Abstract:
Research on the source of natural gas has been able to suggest that there are additional mechanisms involved aside from thermal decomposition of oil in reservoirs. Analysis of the gas samples from Bakken shales in North Dakota show that transition-metal catalysis can also produce the material. The difference between gas from source rocks and traditional oil reservoirs could be attributed to the fractionation processes.
