Cooling and freshening of the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean since the 1960s

Article Abstract:

Measurements of water temperature and salinity taken in the North Atlantic Ocean in Aug 1991 and compared with measurements taken in 1962 and 1981 show that this part of the ocean has become both colder and less salty over the last 20 years. The welling up of Labrador sea water and its subsequent circulation throughout the North Atlantic probably initiated the trend toward cooler and fresher water which is likely to go on for at least the next 10 years. The resulting ocean-atmosphere cooling may negate the effects of greenhouse warming.

A warm future in the past

Article Abstract:

The period 423,000 to 362,000 years ago may provide valuable information for geologists seeking to predict the impact of a possibly warmer climate in the future. The Earth's orbital geometry has been similar during the current interglacial period to what it was during that period, when there were probably extreme climatic variations. Ocean Drilling Program technology is making it possible to extract cores which are providing valuable information about the nature of climate change during this period.

Old radiocarbon ages in the southwest Pacific Ocean during the last glacial period and deglaciation

Article Abstract:

Independent estimates of surface-water and deep-water reservoir ages in the New Zealand region since the last glacial period are detailed. The rise in surface-to-deep water age differences in the glacial Southern Ocean indicates that there was decreased ocean ventilation during this time.
