A comparison of agonistic behavior of colonial web-building spiders from desert and tropical habitats

Article Abstract:

A study of agonistic behavior of two species of colonial spiders from desert and tropical habitats reveals that the degree of aggressiveness is less intense in the tropical species than among the desert species. Availability of food resources determines the agonistic behavior. Size of the body mass determines which spider gets the possession of the web in unbalanced matched contests, but web residents have an edge over intruders in balanced matched contests. The implications of the study in understanding social behavior of spiders are discussed.
